Walking in the Woods, Thanksgiving Prep

Took a break from chopping and stirring yesterday morning to go on a Three Hundred Committee walk along the head of the Coonamessett River and the abandoned bogs, and along “Dutchman’s Ditch” – a man-made herring run – in the Matthew Souza conservation land.

 

This photo is of Lungwort Pulmonaria, “a very rare lichen”, according to Nancy the botanist.

Adopt a herring! (Guaranteed not to shed.) You can actually follow your herring through the ladders from the ocean to the pond. A couple of kids I know got three as a gift. The female made a straight shot to her destination. The male either was lost or exploring, but his trip zigged and zagged, up and back, before finally making it upstream. Might be fun to see if this is typical or not…
